The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul has unveiled a 20-foot monument in honour of the late Major Maxwell Mahama.
The sculpture, situated at Airport Hills Roundabout was constructed in honour of the officer who was killed in Denkyira Obuasi now known as New Obuasi in the central region.
The monument was unveiled on Wednesday, 29 May 2019 in commemoration of the two-year anniversary of the murder.
Major Mahama, then a Captain, was Commander of a unit deployed to counter illegal mining activities. Some residents however mistook him for an armed robber when he went jogging that dawn.
He was chased, lynched and his body set ablaze.
Fourteen persons are currently standing trial at an Accra High Court over the murder of the military officer.
Unveiling the monument, Mr Nitiwul charged Ghanaians to learn from the unfortunate incident and desist from Mob justice.
Government has also set up a fund to provide for the needs of Major Mahama’s wife and children to which president Akufo Addo made a seed donation 50,000.
