President of Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu has described the new cocoa price announced by COCOBOD as a slave price.
The government of Ghana through the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) announced 58.26% increase in the producer price of cocoa, from GH¢1,308 to GH¢2,070 per 64kg bag of cocoa beans for the rest of the 2023/24 season.
Responding to the new price, President of Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu said the price is far less than the cocoa farmer deserved.
Speaking in an interview with Sena Nombo on Radio Gold Morning Conversation, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu described the new price as exploitative as government gets to hold on to over 60% of the proceeds of selling the cocoa on the international market.
The President of the Concerned Farmers Association warned that cocoa farmers will be forced to refuse to sell the commodity to government if government does not review the price upwards.
He said cocoa farmers will only be prepared to sell their beans directly to international buyers if government insisted on selling at the announced price.
Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu warned that failure to heed to the concerns of farmers will have political consequences as moves will be made to educate farmers on the fact that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) consistent stay in office was detrimental to their welfare.
