President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has assured cocoa farmers of a significant boost in incentives to increase production, with a promise of a new and favorable cocoa producer price to be announced in August.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Ahafo Region, President Mahama revealed that the government, through the Ghana Cocoa Board, is preparing to announce a new cocoa producer price.
He emphasized that the forthcoming price adjustment will be highly beneficial to farmers, urging citizens to take advantage of the opportunity.
“We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output in order to increase farmers’ income.
The Cocoa Board Chief Executive has informed me that in August, the new cocoa producer price will be announced, and I can assure you—it’s going to be a very, very, very good price,” President Mahama stated.
“So those of you who don’t have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he encouraged.
Reviving Cocoa and Supporting Agriculture
President Mahama acknowledged the challenges facing the cocoa sector and said plans are underway to revamp the industry. He noted that incentives will be provided to hardworking farmers to stimulate increased production and long-term sustainability.
In line with this, he reiterated his administration’s commitment to the Feed Ghana program, which is designed to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector into a modern and export-driven industry.
“Ahafo Region has fertile lands and is therefore well-positioned to play a key role in our Feed Ghana program,” the President said.
Agricultural Support Initiatives
President Mahama outlined several support mechanisms under the initiative, including:
Targeted input subsidies
Mechanization support
Agricultural extension services
Improved warehouse and irrigation infrastructure
Support for young agro-entrepreneurs through financing and training
He concluded by stressing the importance of food security:
“Let me emphasize that food sovereignty is national security. Together, we will make Ghana self-sufficient in food production.”
