Accra, Ghana – June 1, 2025.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat as an independent authority backed by legislation and reporting directly to the President.
The move, he said, is aimed at ensuring institutional stability, strong coordination, investor confidence, and continuity in the delivery of the 24-hour economy policy.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with industry players in Accra, Mr. Mahama emphasized that the 24-hour economy is not merely a policy initiative, but a national compact designed to drive inclusive growth.
“This is a national agenda for shared prosperity—for creating decent jobs, building competitive exports, supporting thriving local economies, and ensuring long-term economic transformation,” Mr. Mahama stated.
The policy, which is a key component of Mr. Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s economic revitalization, is expected to officially launch on July 1st, which coincides with Ghana’s Republic Day.
The creation of the Secretariat as a standalone authority, with legal backing and autonomy, is intended to safeguard the policy from political cycles and ensure its long-term success, according to Mahama. He reiterated his commitment to working closely with Parliament to make the Secretariat a reality.
The 24-hour economy policy seeks to unlock productivity across sectors by promoting round-the-clock operations in key industries, supported by infrastructure, security, and regulatory incentives.
