The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) says it is yet to determine the cause of Wednesday’s nationwide power outage, describing the incident as an uncommon occurrence and assuring the public that engineers are working around the clock to restore electricity safely across the country.
Speaking on Gold Morning Conversation, GRIDCO’s Managing Corporate Communications Manager, Dzifa Bampoe, apologised to Ghanaians for the disruption and appealed for patience as restoration efforts continue.
She explained that a nationwide system disturbance of this nature results in the loss of electricity generation across the grid, leaving GRIDCO unable to transmit power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for distribution to consumers.
According to Ms Bampoe, although restoration is underway nationwide, the process is highly technical and cannot be rushed.
She said GRIDCO has begun drawing power from the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant as part of the phased restoration process, adding that engineers are carefully reconnecting generation sources and transmission infrastructure to stabilise the national grid.
Ms Bampoe noted that Ghana last experienced a similar nationwide outage in January 2023, but clarified that preliminary assessments indicate the current incident is unrelated to the earlier system failure.
Referring to GRIDCO’s official statement, she stressed that strict safety procedures are guiding every stage of the restoration process to safeguard personnel, equipment and the integrity of the power system.
While expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, Ms Bampoe said it was not yet possible to provide a definite timeline for full restoration because technical teams are still assessing the system and reconnecting generating plants.
She assured consumers that electricity would be restored progressively as generation units are synchronised with the national grid and appealed to the public to remain patient while engineers work to fully restore power.
