President John Dramani Mahama is calling for urgent reforms within the African Union (AU), emphasizing the need for financial independence and reduced reliance on foreign funding.
He acknowledges the AU’s achievements, such as the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and peacekeeping missions like the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
However, he warns that the current structure needs substantial changes to address the evolving demands of a rapidly changing Africa.
Mahama stresses that the AU must evolve into a more efficient, financially independent institution capable of delivering real change.
He points to inefficiencies and bureaucratic hurdles that impede effective decision-making, calling for a streamlined, more agile structure. The President also advocates for the expedited implementation of the Kigali decision on financing the Union, aiming to reduce over-reliance on external funding and foster a more self-sustaining model.
Key areas Mahama highlights for reform include:
- Financial Autonomy: Reducing reliance on foreign funding and increasing self-sustaining financing mechanisms.
- Efficient Decision-Making: Streamlining the AU’s structure to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and improve agility.
- Agenda Setting: Empowering the AU to set its own agenda, free from external influence.
- Sovereignty and Unity: Ensuring the AU’s financial autonomy is crucial for the continent’s future sovereignty and unity.
By addressing these areas, Mahama believes the AU can effectively tackle complex challenges such as youth unemployment, food insecurity, and climate change.
