The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed the critical role of Ghana’s Legislature in upholding democratic governance, urging Ghanaians to recognize Parliament’s integral function as a reflection of the nation’s democratic principles.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Job 600 building on Tuesday, Bagbin underscored that Parliament serves as the “mirror of democracy” and emphasized the institution’s oversight function in ensuring that national resources and efforts are used for the collective benefit. “If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament—this mirror of democracy—that must be strengthened. Beyond law-making, it is Parliament’s duty to provide oversight and ensure our shared resources and trust are applied equitably,” he stated.
Bagbin emphasized that Parliament represents the voices of the people and holds the government accountable, embodying principles of representation, accountability, and governance. He further called on stakeholders and the public to support the Legislature’s role in fortifying Ghana’s democratic framework.
“Strengthening Parliament is not merely Parliament’s responsibility; it’s everyone’s duty. We must work together to ensure that our people do not suffer in vain or struggle to elect us without meaningful results,” he remarked.
The Speaker urged Ghanaians to respect and uphold the institution’s significance in national governance, highlighting the need to reinforce all parliamentary departments to better serve the country.
