President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO), the Ministry of Sanitation under the Local Government, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister to expedite the completion of major drainage systems.
This move aims to mitigate flooding, alleviate the destruction of property, and prevent loss of life in Accra.
During his tour of flood-prone areas in Accra on April 2, 2025.
President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the government’s commitment to minimizing flooding. He charged the Ministry of Sanitation to focus on completing projects that would make Accra resilient to flooding.
The President also highlighted the importance of addressing issues with minor drains, which feed into the main drains. He noted that in some cases, flooding is caused by people building walls or properties in waterways, which affects their neighborhoods.
This directive is part of the government’s efforts to address the issue of flooding in Accra.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development has also issued a directive to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) overseeing GARID projects to ensure proper flood mitigation measures are implemented ahead of the rainy season.
