President John Dramani Mahama has issued a warning to residents of Greater Accra, cautioning them to prepare for severe flooding due to the delayed desilting of major drainage systems in Accra. The President’s warning comes after his visit to flood-prone areas in Accra, including Achimota Abofu, Mallam Junction, Kaneshie, and Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Mahama attributed the impending flooding to the delay in completing drainage projects, which were scheduled to be finished before the rainy season. With the rainy season approaching, the President emphasized that the contractors should have taken advantage of the dry season to work quickly and complete the projects on time.
Unfortunately, the delays will likely result in severe flooding, which could lead to damage and loss of life.
This is not the first time Accra has experienced severe flooding. In 2015, dozens of people died in a petrol station fire while attempting to take shelter from flooding, which was exacerbated by “uncontrolled human settlement” and “unbridled littering”.
