President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent clash at the Obuasi mine that resulted in the loss of eight lives.
The incident involved illegal miners, and the President has expressed profound regret over the tragic loss of life.
The investigation aims to uncover the facts, ensure accountability, and bring any individuals found to have acted unlawfully to justice. Additionally, the government has directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of those injured and facilitate burial arrangements for the deceased.
To prevent similar incidents in the future, the nation’s security agencies have been tasked with restoring peace in the area and implementing measures to prevent such occurrences.
This is not the first time AngloGold Ashanti has dealt with issues related to illegal mining.
In 2016, nine illegal miners died on the company’s concessions over a period of three weeks .
