Minister of education designate, Haruna Iddrisu is scheduled to testify before the Appointments Committee of Parliament today, Monday, January 20, 2025.
It is anticipated that this screening process will determine if he is qualified for a crucial cabinet position.
Among other things, he is supposed to describe his credentials, strategic outlook, and workable plans for the education ministry.
Since 2005, Haruna Iddrisu, the member of parliament for the Tamale South constituency, has established himself as a gifted orator who is renowned for his eloquence, reasoned reasoning, and capacity to resolve difficult circumstances in a practical manner.
Haruna Iddrisu’s legal knowledge and wealth of public policy experience, along with her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ghana and her Barrister at Law accreditation from the Ghana School of Law, will be crucial in shaping the future of education in the country.
Throughout his political career, the Tamale South member of parliament has held several high-profile ministerial positions, including Minister for Communications, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations.
His tenure as Minister for Communications from 2009 to 2013 was marked by initiatives that transformed Ghana’s telecommunications sector, including the introduction of Mobile Number Portability and the Data Protection Law, demonstrating his commitment to consumer rights and privacy.
Having served as the Minority Leader from January 2017 to January 2023, Haruna Iddrisu’s leadership experience and deep understanding of parliamentary procedures are crucial as he steps into the education sector, which faces challenges ranging from accommodation food supply to quality in education.
Haruna Iddrisu also has a rich history of involvement in international affairs, representing Ghana in various capacities, including as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the International Labour Organisation.
His background in labor relations will be instrumental in fostering collaboration between educational institutions and industry to ensure that Ghana’s youth are equipped with the relevant skills for the job market.
Notably, Haruna Iddrisu’s previous leadership role as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in 1996 highlights his ability to engage and mobilize youth, a crucial demographic for the education ministry.
His continued commitment to youth engagement is further evidenced by his active participation in community sports in Tamale, where he regularly plays football with his constituents.
If confirmed, Haruna Iddrisu will be taking the reins of the Ministry of Education at such a critical time in the education sector.
His vision and strategic approach to educational reforms will be key to addressing challenges and meeting the aspirations of Ghanaian students.
