President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the National Defence University (NDU) of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 163 cadet officers at the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie on April 11, 2025, President Mahama highlighted the significance of the NDU’s establishment with a Presidential Charter.
This charter empowers the Ghana Armed Forces to expand their academic scope, focusing on defense and security.
Key Initiatives and Benefits
Upgrading Commissioning Course
The National Defense University will upgrade the commissioning course to postgraduate diploma status, enabling newly commissioned officers to graduate with a postgraduate diploma.
Improved Infrastructure and Resources
The Ghana Military Academy, a key constituent of the NDU, will receive improved infrastructure and resources to fulfill its educational mandate.
Strategic Higher Education
The National Defense University will offer strategic academic courses to support the government’s efforts in providing high-quality education for qualified Ghanaians, both civilians and military personnel.
Incorporating Military Discipline:
The university aims to incorporate military discipline and doctrine into mainstream education, advancing Ghana’s development agenda and supporting the “Reset Ghana” initiative.

Digital Jobs Initiative:
Targets creating 300,000 skilled employment opportunities for young people through a ‘Digital Jobs Initiative’ and a FinTech Growth Fund with an initial seed capital of $50 million.
