A meeting between the organizers of the Dumsor vigil and the Ghana Police Service took place on May 15, 2024, at the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.
The meeting aimed to discuss the modalities of the intended demonstration, which seeks to raise awareness about the adverse effects of the ongoing power supply challenges in Ghana.
However, the meeting ended inconclusively as parties disagreed on the venue. The organizers, led by actress Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramedo, and Henry Osei Akoto, want to hold the protest against erratic power supply at the Revolution Square, while the police insist it’s a security zone.
The meeting is scheduled to continue next week to reach an agreement.
Background
In 2015, Ghana experienced severe power cuts, leading to widespread frustration among citizens. Actress and producer Yvonne Nelson organized a massive protest against the John Mahama government over the erratic power supply at the same venue, the Revolutionary Square.
