The former deputy Information Minister under the National Democratic Congress, NDC in the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama’s administration, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has urged a response to claims that the NPP government contracted the Tema – Mpakadan Rail Project.
According to the maverick communicator, the Tema to Mpakadan Rail project, sections of which are pictured below, is not the initiative of President Akufo-Addo.
He revealed that the claim by the ruling New Patriotic Party demonstrates another blatant lie and the facts around that project and stated as follows;
- In the NDC Government October 2016, secured $398.330 million from the Indian EXIM Bank and at its 14th sitting on 31st October 2016, the 6th Parliament of the 4th Republic approved the credit facility.
- On 18th November 2016, the Government of Ghana through the Ghana Railway Development Authority signed a contract with the contractors for the project, Messrs AFCON Infrastructure Limited, for the construction of an 84.832 km rail line from Tema to Akosombo.
- In March 2020, the Akufo-Addo government secured and had Parliament approve $ 48.8 million from the same EXIM Bank of India for the extension of the project from 84.832 km to 97. 625 km which is an extension of 13 km between Akosombo and Mpakadan.
For these reasons, he believes the NPP did not initiate the project and for that matter can not be their achievement.
