Member of Parliament for Central Tongu Alexander Gabby Hottordze has echoed President John Mahama’s call for the declaration of a State of Emergency in the areas affected by flooding.
Speaking in an interview with Sena Nombo on Gold Morning Conversation, the Central Tongu MP argued that a State of Emergency would serve as signal and invitation to international organizations to provide assistance to the country in tackling the crisis and lend a hand to affected individuals.
He said government’s response to the disaster thus far betrays the fact that the State lacked the necessary resources to adequately assist the areas and persons affected by the flooding and the declaration of a state of emergency would lessen the burden of government.
Majority of aid and assistance for the affected communities have come from individuals and companies that have been rallied by the media to go to the support of the people.
Despite the impressive response from the Ghanaian populace and companies, the situation at the flood-affected areas remains dire with fears of looming hunger, poverty and a public health emergency with the outbreak of diseases.
Alexander Gabby Hottordze said he suspected the government was hesitant to declare a state of emergency because the affected areas are strongholds of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) thus don’t heavily support the NPP.
