The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee is worried about the continuous closure of Ghana’s land borders.
Ghana’s land borders have remained closed despite majority of ECOWAS countries opening theirs.
This, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa said was in direct contravention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s own directives as ECOWAS President.
According to Mr. Okudzeto-Ablakwa, President Akufo-Addo as Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State presided over a session where it was agreed that member states open land borders by 31 July 2021.
He wondered why President Akufo-Addo has failed to lead by example despite the fact that majority of the other member states had met the deadline.
The North Tongu MP was contributing to Parliament’s debate of the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration’s 2022 budget.
The Nana Akufo-Addo administration in 2020 directed the closure of land borders to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite a reduction in the number of COVID-19 cases, President Akufo-Addo through the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery says it would only open the borders after 20 million of Ghana’s population is vaccinated against COVID.
Ambrose Dery was responding to protests by Ghanaians living close to the country’s borders against the closures.
The North Tongu MP was disappointed that government failed to mention the situation in its 2022 budget statement despite the impact it had on the lives of residents in communities close to the borders.
