The Winneba Divisional Police Command is on the hunt for a suspect who allegedly assaulted a journalist with Radio Gold, Emmanuel Coffie and a reporter with Winneba based Nyce FM, Abena Serwaa on December 19th 2023.
The suspect who was identified by eyewitnesses as a ‘personal bodyguard’ of Member of Parliament of Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markins attacked the journalists for filming the open display of cash at a polling station during the district assembly elections.
Narrating the incident to Sena Nombo, host of the Gold Morning Conversation, Coffie Emmanuel said bystanders identified the suspect as “Adams”, a known affiliate of the MP who was well known for his alleged thuggery in the name of working for the deputy Majority leader.
According to the reporter, when a police officer at the Winneba Divisional Police Command identified the character in question and even called him to inquire of the whereabouts of their personal effects which Adams seized after allegedly pulling a knife and threatening to kill Coffie Emmanuel for his refusal to handover his mobile phones.
Adams seized the two cellular phones of the journalists, a handbag containing undisclosed amount of money, medications and other personal belongings.
Radio Gold reporter Coffie Emmanuel said incident occurred at the University of Education, Winneba central campus (UEW 1 NAM) polling station where they were to report on the just ended 2023 district Assembly elections.
The incident, Gold News understands occurred around 3;30pm, when a Toyota corolla vehicle was driven to the polling station and the driver of the said vehicle begun to splash bundles of cash on the floor at the polling station.
This attracted the attention of the voters who were in a queue waiting to cast their vote, who abandoned the voting process and started scramble to get their hands on some of the fresh bundles of 5 cedi notes that had been sprayed.
The journalists upon seeing the event, started to film.
The driver of the Toyota corolla vehicle then drove off and left the polling station, only for two well-built macho men to storm the same polling station few minutes later.
The two well-built men approached the reporters and demanded for their mobile phones to delete the recorded videos.
This resulted in a scuffle between the journalists and one of the bodyguards.
The two journalists said the bodyguard pounced on them, twisted their arms in an attempted to seize their mobile phones.
In the ensuing struggle, the bodyguard pulled up a sharp knife and said to the journalists, “I can kill you here and nothing will happen, nobody will touch me”.
The journalists upon sensing danger, quickly, handed over the phones and a handbag containing money, medications and other belongings to the bodyguard whose name was later disclosed by onlookers as Adams, and also said to be a bodyguard to the deputy majority leader in Ghana’s parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markins.
The journalists have filed a complaint at the Winneba divisional police command.
