Four people were injured when violence erupted at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa around 5 am. The clash involved members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and was reportedly triggered by a disagreement over the queuing of voters seeking to transfer their votes to the constituency.
During the incident, Ato Koomson, son of incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, was stabbed in the chest and has been rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra due to the severity of his injuries. Three members of the NDC were also injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic.
According to Mike Addy, the constituency secretary for the NPP in Awutu Senya East, the misunderstanding began around 4:30 am over the seating arrangement at the center. When Ato Koomson attempted to maintain peace, a gentleman from the NDC allegedly attacked him. The police have since arrested the individual in question.
The NDC Communication Bureau in Awutu Senya East released a statement condemning the incident and blaming the NPP for the violence. The statement, signed by the constituency Communication officer for the NDC in Awutu Senya East, Delali Seworkpor, described the incident as another instance of aggression and lawlessness perpetuated by the NPP. The statement also accused the son of incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson of being behind the violence.
The NDC expressed concerns over the police’s decision to take their constituency organizer, Daniel Techie Mensah, into custody, questioning the impartiality of the police. The police have since arrested two persons, including the NDC constituency organizer, in connection with the violence.
