The Ghana Cedi is having a tough time compared to other important currencies, especially the US dollar. On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, we discovered that one US dollar is worth GH¢15.45 at some forex bureaus. That’s a lot of cedis for just one dollar!
But it’s a little different at the interbank forex market. There, one US dollar is equal to GH¢14.30. So, it’s not quite as bad as at the forex bureaus.
The Cedi is also struggling against other currencies. For example, one British Pound is worth GH¢19.53, and one Euro is worth GH¢16.53 at the main forex bureaus in Ghana.
Recently, a website called Bloomberg said that out of 150 important currencies in the world, the Ghana Cedi is the fourth-worst performing one. This means that compared to most other currencies, the cedi is not doing well at all.
Bloomberg said that on Monday, June 10, 2024, the cedi lost a little bit more value. It went down by 0.2% and was worth 14.9335 per dollar by the end of the day in Accra.
Since the start of the year, the cedi has lost 20% of its value when compared to the US dollar. That’s a big drop in just a few months.
People say that the cedi is doing so poorly because more people need US dollars to buy things like fuel, medicines, and other products that Ghana brings in from other countries. When lots of people want dollars, it makes the cedi less valuable.
It’s not a good situation for Ghana’s money. The government and the people will have to work hard to find ways to make the cedi stronger again.
