The NDC Professionals Forum US Chapter has called on Ghanaians, particularly members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to remain vigilant in protecting the country’s democratic values.
In a statement signed by its President Arnold Appiah and copied to RADIO GOLD, the group praised the leadership of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and commended the NDC members of Parliament for their bravery in reinforcing democratic principles in Ghana.
The forum said that the courage shown by NDC parliamentarians will be instrumental in ensuring a peaceful and secure country before, during, and after the December 7 elections.
The commendations follow recent actions by the Supreme Court, which issued a stay of Speaker Bagbin’s communication to Parliament that four parliamentary seats have become vacant because their MPs have violated Article 97(1)(g).
This communication from the Speaker shifted the balance of power in Parliament with the opposition National Democratic Congress assuming the status of the Majority party in the house while the governing NPP is reduced to a Minority status.
The historic shift has led the NPP to run to the court for solace seeking to keep the affected MPs in court despite their clear violation of the constitution.
The NDC Majority has responded by condemning the court’s intervention as an intrusion into the independence of Parliament and insisted that they remain the majority.
“This bravery and wisdom from the NDC lawmakers reflect their maturity and genuine love for the people they represent,” the NDC Pro-Forum said in the statement.
The group specifically applauded the leader of the NDC caucus in Parliament, Casiel Ato Forson, as well as the leadership of Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, and all caucus members for their steadfast commitment in such challenging times.
NDC Professionals Forum US Chapter expressed the hope that spirit shown by the NDC Majority in Parliament would inspire collective success for the party in the upcoming elections on December 7.
The NDC lawmakers have affirmed their intention to adhere to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling and remain undeterred by the Supreme Court’s order, reaffirming their dedication to representing the interests of their constituents
