Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are significantly advancing regional energy integration with the commencement of the 330 kV Double Circuit Interconnection Reinforcement Project.
This joint initiative between the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and Côte d’Ivoire Energies (CI-ENERGIES) aims to bolster electricity exchanges, enhance infrastructure development between the two long-standing sub-regional partners, and improve the operational efficiency of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) network.
From June 25th to 27th, 2025, Accra is hosting a high-level meeting of Energy Ministers from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Organized by the WAPP Secretariat in collaboration with GRIDCo, the gathering seeks to adopt and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU is expected to define the framework for collaboration and cooperation between the parties regarding the project’s development.
Abdoulaye Dia, Secretary General of WAPP, emphasized the project’s strategic importance.
“This priority project is part of the broader WAPP Coastal Transmission Backbone that connects the electricity networks of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria,” he stated. He added that the project has the full backing of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, and its completion will serve as a fundamental pillar to strengthen electricity trade within the region.
At the meeting, Solomon Adjetey Sowah, Chief Director of Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, speaking on behalf of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abu Jinapor, highlighted the programme’s significance as a crucial step towards achieving regional energy integration.
He noted that the presented feasibility study, a product of extensive analysis and collaboration, will guide the collective decision-making for this strategic interconnection. Sowah stressed the project’s immense promise for both nations and their citizens, further underlining the importance of formalizing their commitment through the signing of legal instruments.
This robust framework, he explained, will not only facilitate seamless project implementation but also ensure collaboration is firmly rooted in mutual trust, transparency, and shared responsibility.
The Chief Director reaffirmed the Minister’s steadfast commitment to actively supporting the effective functioning of this cooperation framework. He emphasized the Ministry’s readiness to contribute expertise, resources, and institutional support to ensure the timely and successful execution of this transformative project.
“As the host institution, I wish to unequivocally reaffirm the full availability and steadfast commitment of the Honourable Minister to actively support the effective functioning of this cooperation framework. We stand ready to contribute our expertise, our resources, and our institutional support to ensure the timely and, most importantly, the successful execution of this transformative project.” He stated.
In his closing remarks, Solomon Adjetey Sowah encouraged an approach to discussions filled with enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and a spirit of collaboration. He voiced his strong anticipation for fruitful discussions and positive outcomes from the meeting.
