President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Brussels to participate in the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunisation, co-hosted by the European Union, the Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
President Mahama joins global leaders and key stakeholders as a prominent advocate for Gavi’s 2026–2030 replenishment campaign, which aims to immunise an additional 500 million children, save over 8 million lives, and prevent up to 150 disease outbreaks.

According to the release, the initiative is also expected to deliver over $100 billion in economic benefits across lower-income countries.
His participation underscores the critical importance of global solidarity in ensuring fair and equitable access to life-saving vaccines.
President Mahama, drawing from Ghana’s own immunisation success story and Africa’s broader experience, continues to champion the vision of a fully funded Gavi.
“Vaccination is one of the most powerful tools we have, not just to save lives, but to drive economic growth, strengthen health systems, and secure our collective future,” President Mahama said ahead of the summit.
This marks a continuation of his longstanding commitment to global health advocacy. In 2013, President Mahama supported a similar Gavi replenishment effort during his presidency, reinforcing Ghana’s partnership with the Alliance to protect children through increased immunisation coverage.
Since its inception in 2000, Gavi has helped vaccinate over 1 billion children, preventing more than 18.8 million deaths and generating more than $250 billion in economic returns for partner countries.
While in Brussels, President Mahama is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with global leaders, including the President of the European Union Council of Ministers and Bill Gates, co-chair of the Gates Foundation.
The summit presents a key moment to galvanise support from both traditional and emerging donors, and to reaffirm Gavi’s unique role in uniting governments, international institutions, civil society, communities, and industry in a shared mission to save lives and build resilience through immunisation.
