The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has firmly stated that individuals involved in the violent disturbances during last Friday’s re-run election at the Ablekuma North Constituency will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series, held under the supervision of Government Communications at the Presidency, the Minister condemned the electoral violence, describing it as a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic gains and sustainable development.
“Election-related violence undermines the democratic process and derails government’s efforts toward peace and national development.
The government completely condemns this unfortunate development,” Hon. Muntaka stated.
His comments echo an earlier condemnation by the Vice President, H.E. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who, on behalf of the government, expressed concern over the incident and instructed the Inspector-General of Police to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
In a strong show of resolve, the Interior Minister also reiterated that he has directed the Inspector-General of Police to launch a full-scale investigation into the incident and ensure that all those found culpable face the full rigors of the law.
Government sources say security agencies have already begun preliminary investigations and will provide updates in due course.
