President John Dramani Mahama led the mourning procession for the late Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The two prominent figures were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Burma Camp on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
At the burial ceremony, President Mahama offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, expressing gratitude for their patience in allowing the forensic process to be completed before the burial.
“Today is not a day for talking,” he said. “I just want to say thank you for your sympathy. Indeed, the Quran tells us that whoever attends the funeral of a fellow and then stays to the last end of a funeral receives blessing.”
Mahama also paid tribute to the departed souls, describing them as integral members of his team.
“The two brothers, Muniru and Murtala were both personally close to me,” he recalled. “Murtala, I mentored when he was a new MP at Nanton, and he had been a devout member of our team. One of our very bright intellectuals and very eloquent in Parliament, and he had been a part of our reset agenda.”
President Mahama further noted that the government would continue to work tirelessly to achieve its objectives in honor of the late Dr. Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru.
“I believe that they would have wanted us to continue with the hard work that we were doing with them,” he said. “And so, in memory of them, we shall continue to work very hard, to serve the people of Ghana and to ensure the success of our reset agenda, so that their names will be written in gold in Paradise.”
The Islamic Janazah prayers were performed at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, before the burial. The Chief Imam and other Islamic leaders offered prayers for the departed souls in accordance with Islamic tradition.
In his remarks, President Mahama prayed for the souls of the departed, saying, “May God grant them Paradise, and may the memory of them guide us too.” The state funeral, which will be held on August 15, 2025, will serve as a poignant tribute to the memory and legacy of all eight victims who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash.
