The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced sweeping upgrades across Ghana’s aviation sector, aimed at boosting connectivity, trade, and passenger convenience in line with government’s 24-hour economy policy.
He revealed that the Bolgatanga Airport will be redeveloped to accommodate jet aircraft, positioning it as a key gateway to the Upper East Region. The project, currently at the study and site assessment stage, is expected to stimulate growth in trade, tourism, and mining.
At the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport, the runway is being extended from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and support international operations.
The project is 90 percent complete and expected to finish by year-end. Night operations have also been extended, running from 8 pm to 11 pm, while Tamale International Airport now operates up to 10 pm, measures designed to improve accessibility and support round-the-clock economic activity.
In Accra, the Minister disclosed that Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport will soon be repurposed to ease congestion at Terminal 3. Ghana Airports Company Limited has developed a plan to convert the facility into a dual-purpose terminal serving both domestic and international flights.
The initiative seeks to optimize infrastructure, enhance operational efficiency, and improve the passenger experience.
