The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, says investigations into election-related killings and injuries recorded in 2020 and 2024 have reached an advanced stage, with 21 suspects identified so far.
He disclosed this during a special press briefing on Tuesday, where he provided a detailed update yet on the outcome of the government’s probe into electoral violence.
According to the Minister, 15 people lost their lives and 40 others sustained various degrees of injury across multiple constituencies during the two election years. He said four of the suspects are currently on bail, five are on remand, while arrest warrants have been issued for the rest.
The 2020 general election recorded the highest number of casualties. Six constituencies were affected, including Techiman South, Odododiodio, Ablekuma Central, Banda, Dormaa West and Savelugu. A total of eight deaths were recorded in Techiman South and Odododiodio alone, with 24 injuries combined.
In Savelugu, one person died and three suffered injuries, while Ablekuma Central accounted for one death and four injuries. Banda and Dormaa West each recorded a single death, with Banda reporting two injuries and Dormaa West one.
The 2024 elections also witnessed violent incidents in six constituencies, but with fewer deaths. Central Region’s Awutu Senya recorded one death and one injury. Other affected areas included Tolon in the Northern Region, Damongo in the Savannah Region and Nkoranza South in the Bono East Region.
Each constituency reported one death. Two people were killed and two others injured in Offinso North in the Ashanti Region. Ahafo Ano South West also reported one death and three injuries.
The Minister assured that the state is determined to ensure accountability for every violent act that occurred during the elections. He emphasised that justice for victims and their families remains a national responsibility.
He noted that security agencies are pursuing the remaining suspects, and the Ministry is working to strengthen election security operations to prevent similar incidents in future national polls.
The Interior Ministry has promised to update the press as further arrests and prosecutions progress.
