A Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, said the deceased passed away at the Emergency Medical Reception at the airport at about 6:55 p.m.
The deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in Ghana at 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.
According to the Ministry, reports from fellow passengers indicated that the evacuee’s health condition began to deteriorate approximately 30 minutes before the aircraft touched down in Accra.
A medical emergency team that was on standby at the airport immediately attended to the passenger upon arrival. However, despite efforts to save the evacuee, doctors confirmed the death at 6:55 p.m.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is currently undertaking the necessary formalities to inform the deceased’s family.
The remains have also been deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Ministry said it would provide further updates after formally engaging the bereaved family.
