The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, together with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso West Municipality, Dr. Michael Mensah, have donated furniture to the Opportunities Industrialization Technical Institute (OIC) in Accra to support teaching and learning.
The donation forms part of ongoing efforts by the government and local authorities to improve educational infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment for students across the municipality.
Addressing students and staff during the presentation ceremony, Dr. Michael Mensah said the intervention reflects the government’s commitment to investing in education and ensuring that schools receive the support needed to enhance academic performance.
He noted that the furniture distribution is part of a broader initiative aimed at addressing challenges facing schools in the municipality and improving conditions for both students and teachers.
The MCE urged students and school authorities to take proper care of the furniture, stressing that significant public resources had been invested in procuring them.
“Government has committed substantial resources to provide these furniture items for our schools. We therefore urge students and management to make good use of them and ensure they are properly maintained so that future generations of students can also benefit from them,” he said.
Hon. John Dumelo, on his part, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting education in Ayawaso West Wuogon, describing the sector as one of his key priorities as Member of Parliament.
According to him, the furniture donation is part of efforts to improve learning conditions in schools across the constituency and complement the government’s broader educational development agenda.
The Deputy Minister noted that various schools within the municipality face different infrastructure challenges, including inadequate classroom blocks, insufficient laboratory facilities and a lack of sanitation infrastructure.
He disclosed that steps were being taken to address these concerns and improve educational facilities across the constituency.
“Education remains one of my top priorities. While some schools require additional classroom blocks, others need laboratory facilities, toilet infrastructure and other essential amenities. We are working with stakeholders to address these challenges and ensure that our students have access to quality learning environments,” he stated.
The Principal of Opportunities Industrialization Technical Institute, Mr. Mawuli Sogbey, expressed appreciation to the MP and the MCE for the support, describing the donation as timely and impactful.
Speaking on behalf of the school’s management, he said the furniture would significantly ease challenges associated with accommodating newly admitted first-year students.
“We are grateful to Hon. John Dumelo and Dr. Michael Mensah for this support. We were particularly concerned about how to provide adequate furniture for the first-year students who are reporting to school, and this donation has come at the right time. It will go a long way in supporting teaching and learning,” he said.
Mr. Sogbey, however, appealed for additional support to address some of the school’s pressing infrastructure needs, including the construction of more classroom blocks and the fencing of the school’s perimeter.
According to him, the absence of a perimeter wall has exposed the school to encroachment and other security challenges that require urgent attention.
The donation is expected to improve classroom conditions and support efforts by the Mahama administration, the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly and the area’s parliamentary leadership to strengthen technical and vocational education within the municipality.
The gesture also highlights the government’s broader commitment to expanding access to quality education and improving infrastructure in schools across the country.
