Liverpool kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with an electrifying 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid at the iconic Anfield on Wednesday night.
The match was marked by Liverpool’s rampant start, scoring two goals in the opening six minutes. Atletico Madrid fought back, with Marcos Llorente netting twice, including a dramatic equalizer in the 81st minute. Virgil van Dijk’s dramatic stoppage-time header sealed the victory, marking Liverpool’s 15th successive win in home European group/league phase matches.
Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot credited resilience to their performance on the night;
“We needed to show character and resilience tonight. Atletico Madrid is a tough opponent, and they gave us a real test. I’m pleased with how the team responded, especially after going behind. The players coming in, like Alexander Isak, are getting chances to show what they can do, and that’s positive.
Liverpool’s ability to come back from behind was very crucial, where Van dijk and Salah played a very crucial role also. The manager also spoke of the atmosphere saying, “The atmosphere at Anfield was electric, and the fans pushed us forward. We had some great moments, and Van Dijk’s late header was incredible. Now, we focus on the next challenge and keep building momentum”.
