The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says the government is not bound by law to compensate residents of Appiatse who were displaced by an explosion in the town this year.
However, it says it is earnestly making all efforts to “reconstruct the community and support the victims of the incident”.
The Ministry’s position follows the appeal made by former President, John Dramani Mahama for government to work towards compensating the victims. He made the point when he visited the area on Tuesday.
But the ministry in a statement contended that victims of the Appiatse disaster are not restrained from taking legal action to demand compensation.
There is intense pressure for the government to fast-track the reconstruction of the town.
At least 14 were killed while scores were left injured in the tragic incident.
The Appiatse Support Fund has received over GH¢35 million in donations so far.
