The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties following his arrest and detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered the seizure of his travel documents, effectively barring him from leaving the country while investigations continue.
Abronye was arrested on May 13 and is facing two charges — offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.
The court’s decision follows proceedings on Wednesday, May 20, during which the prosecution requested a short adjournment to allow time to file its response to the bail application.
Counsel for Abronye, Daniel Amartey Addo, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the request, arguing that the Republic had already been served with the application on May 14, 2026.
However, Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali told the court that although the Republic had been served on May 14, the timeline amounted to only three clear days instead of six.
She admitted that the motion was ready for hearing but maintained that prosecutors required additional time to consult investigators and adequately prepare their response.
In its ruling, the court stated that it had considered the Republic’s request and was duty-bound to balance the interests of justice with the constitutional rights of the accused.
Abronye’s detention and subsequent court proceedings have generated significant political debate within the NPP and among the wider public, given his reputation as one of the party’s outspoken regional executives.
