Member of Parliament for Builsa South Dr. Clement Apaak has described the joint committee probe ordered by the Speaker of Parliament as a victory for democracy.
Rt. Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin directed the Select Committees of Finance and Health to probe expenditures made in the name of COVID.
The directive by the Speaker covers monies contributed by public and private institutions to a fund set up by government and managed by a group of trustees headed by former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo.
Dr. Clement Apaakis of the opinion that the probe was necessary as the Nana Akufo-Addo led government has refused to account fully for the GH¢19.3billion spent on the COVID.
Dr. Apaak who is Deputy Ranking member Select Committee on Parliament’s Select Committee on Education said the attempt by the Finance minister Ken Ofori Atta to justify the expenditures when he appeared before Parliament on 22 June 2022 further exposed the contradictions in the information provided to Parliament by the same Minister through the 2021 Mid-Year Budget.
According to him the Finance Minister’s claim that GH¢1.1billion was spent on preparations for the reopening of schools sharply contradicted President Akufo-Addo’s claim in the 2022 State of the Nation’s Address that GH¢1.9 billion was spent.
