Kofi Koranteng, an activist and independent candidate, has criticized Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), for the organization’s approach to its responsibilities in the lead-up to the December 7th elections.
In an interview on Joy TV’s NewsFile, Koranteng labelled the electoral commissioner as unprofessional, asserting that he would have dismissed the EC staff for their lack of competence if they were under his authority.
He expressed concerns regarding the irregularities observed as the 2024 elections approached.
Koranteng highlighted specific instances of the EC’s inefficiency, noting that meetings scheduled for 2 PM often do not commence until 6 PM, without any valid explanation for the delays. He also pointed out occasions when the EC has strayed from the agenda of the day.
“You cannot manage a country as if it were a simple food stall. This is how I feel when Dr. Bossman Asare makes excuses for every issue. There should be clarity and specificity,” Koranteng advised the EC.
Additionally, Koranteng criticized Dr. Bossman for claiming that the EC has arranged for generators to be used in case of power outages during the elections. He deemed this plan a waste of resources, arguing that it reflects the EC’s incompetence.
He suggested that the EC should have implemented a system capable of barcoding votes to verify ballots, allowing voters to use their phones in the event of a power failure and preventing double voting.
“There are over 41 polling stations, and they expect independent candidates and those from smaller parties to provide their own security and oversight at these locations, which indicates a lack of understanding of their responsibilities.
If they were competent, they wouldn’t require political candidates to supply their own personnel to monitor the polling stations,” he questioned the EC.
