The Fair Wages and Salaries Commissioner has called on Accountant Generals across Africa to go beyond routine administration and focus on building enduring institutions that strengthen public financial management.
Speaking at the 3rd International Executive Conference of the African Association of Accountant Generals in Accra, the Commissioner underscored the need for public finance leaders to champion fiscal innovation, safeguard integrity, and mentor the next generation of leaders.
“The true legacy of an Accountant General is not measured by the infrastructure they build or the policies they implement, but by the impact they make on people and organizations,” he said. “We must think beyond our tenure and build institutions that transcend political cycles.”
Delivering a keynote address on the theme “From Office to Influence: Redefining Your Legacy,” he challenged participants to redefine success in leadership by focusing on people development rather than short-term achievements.
Drawing from his own experience as the first Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, he recalled how mentoring younger staff prepared them for leadership roles.
“When I prioritized grooming younger staff, many of them rose into leadership positions. That is the kind of legacy that truly lasts,” he added.
He outlined the pillars of what he termed Legacy-Driven Leadership, which include visionary and strategic leadership, encouraging innovation, and building capacity.
The conference, which drew Accountant Generals and financial management experts from 19 African countries, provided a platform for exchanging ideas and charting the future of public financial management across the continent.
