The Government of Ghana has formally filed a high-level protest with the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, following a violent attack on the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The incident, which occurred in Southern Lebanon on March 6, 2026, left two Ghanaian soldiers with serious injuries. In a swift diplomatic response, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, condemned the act in the strongest possible terms, characterizing it as a flagrant breach of international protections.
In the official protest, the Ghanaian government called for a “full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation” into the circumstances of the assault.
The statement underscored the gravity of the incident, noting that targeting those deployed in the service of international peace is not merely a local skirmish, but a violation of global legal standards.
The government asserted that the attack constitutes a grave violation of international law, amounts to a war crime, and affronts the protections afforded to United Nations peacekeeping personnel.
The Ministry further urged the United Nations to implement more robust measures to protect the Ghanaian contingent and their colleagues who serve at great personal risk.
Despite the violence, Ghana’s stance on global stability remains firm, with the government reaffirming its unwavering and longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping operations. The communiqué also demanded that those responsible be identified and held strictly accountable for their actions.
To the soldiers currently on the front lines, the Government of Ghana gave a firm assurance that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is in constant communication with the relevant United Nations authorities to monitor the recovery of the injured soldiers and the progress of the investigation.
”The safety and protection of peacekeeping personnel must remain paramount in the collective effort to maintain international peace and security,” the statement concluded, while offering thoughts and prayers for the wounded and their families.
