The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has paid tribute to women making significant contributions to Ghana’s maritime sector as the world marks International Women’s Day 2026.
In a message to commemorate the day, the Authority highlighted the critical role women play in shaping and advancing the country’s maritime industry, noting that the sector’s strength is not only defined by its resources but also by the quality of leadership and innovation demonstrated by women within it.
“The strength of Ghana’s maritime industry is not measured solely by the depth of our waters or the size of our fleet, but by the caliber of the women who navigate, lead, and innovate within our sector,” the Authority stated.
The GMA joined the global celebration under the theme “Give to Gain,” emphasizing the importance of empowerment, mentorship, and collaboration in advancing opportunities for women in the maritime space.
According to the Authority, progress within the maritime industry is best achieved through shared efforts that encourage knowledge transfer, advocacy, and resource-sharing.
“At the GMA, we believe that progress is not a solitary voyage but a shared journey fueled by the transformative power of mentorship, advocacy, and resource-sharing,” the statement noted.
The Authority stressed that investing in the development of women within the sector goes beyond providing support and should be seen as a strategic investment that benefits the wider maritime ecosystem and the national blue economy.
“When we invest our time and expertise into the growth of women, we are not merely offering support; we are making a purposeful investment that multiplies impact across our communities, our organisation, and the entire blue economy,” it added.
As part of efforts to strengthen the participation and leadership of women in maritime, the GMA indicated that it remains committed to promoting skills development, leadership training, community engagement, and recognition of outstanding female professionals in the sector.
The Authority said these initiatives are intended to build a more inclusive and resilient maritime industry where women are empowered with the confidence and competencies required to lead.
“The ‘Give to Gain’ mandate reminds us that we all thrive when we lift one another, ensuring that the future of Ghana’s maritime sector is both forward-looking and representative of the diverse talent that keeps us moving,” the Authority emphasized.
The GMA concluded by celebrating women who continue to make remarkable strides in the maritime sector, noting that their dedication and leadership are vital to the growth and sustainability of the industry.
“Today, the Ghana Maritime Authority salutes every woman steering our industry toward excellence, because when we give our support today, we gain a stronger, more sustainable maritime future for all.”
