The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) has officially taken delivery of advanced Cervical Cancer Screening Equipment, marking the fulfillment of a significant commitment by the Telecel Ghana Group to enhance the nation’s capacity to fight the disease.
The state-of-the-art equipment was formally handed over at a ceremony in Accra, attended by the Minister of Health, distinguished management and staff of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and officials from the Ministry of Health.
Speaking at the event, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko – Opoku underscored the significance of the partnership, describing the ceremony as the “continuation of a commitment, a promise made, and a promise kept.”

”When the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, was launched at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Telecel Ghana stood among the very first corporate partners to step forward, not with words, but with action,” the Administrator stated. “They pledged to support the fight against cervical cancer and, true to their word, they provided a plan, a timeline, and they have delivered.”
She noted that installations have already begun across the country, with hospitals in Korle-Bu, Tamale, and Sefwi Wiawso receiving the equipment, thus “turning promises into purpose, and compassion into care.” This, Obubia highlighted, demonstrates both the integrity of the partner and a sense of shared social responsibility.
Restoring Hope and Promoting Equitable Care
She reaffirmed the core mandate of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which is to bridge critical gaps in the national healthcare system. This mission involves supporting patients in need, empowering medical professionals through specialist training, and strengthening hospitals with modern equipment and infrastructure.
“Our focus is simple. To make quality healthcare accessible, equitable, and sustainable for every Ghanaian,” Obubia emphasized. “This partnership is a living example of what can be achieved when compassion meets collaboration. Through this initiative, we are not only providing equipment but also restoring hope, promoting fairness in healthcare, and reaffirming that the healthcare of every Ghanaian matters deeply to our nation’s progress.”
A Call for Deeper Collaboration
Extending gratitude to the Telecel delegation, the Administrator highly commended their belief that corporate responsibility “goes beyond business,” and that real national progress is achieved through investment in the well-being of the people. She added that the Fund looks forward to deepening this partnership for even greater impact.
Obubia Darko-Opoku also thanked the leadership and staff of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for their tireless, life-saving service, assuring them that this new equipment would significantly bolster their efforts.
Concluding the speech, the Trust Fund Administrator affirmed the Fund’s unwavering mission to make quality healthcare accessible to all Ghanaians living with non-communicable diseases.
“Together with partners like Telecel, and with the continued support of our health institutions, we will continue to act, to serve, and to make a lasting difference, because at the heart of it all, EVERY GHANAIAN LIFE MATTERS, and indeed, MAHAMA TRULY CARES.”
The equipments donated included HPV testing kits, digital colposcopes, and biopsy instruments for cervical cancer diagnosis. Telecel Ghana Foundation also pledged to cover the operational costs of these new machines for a period of two years at the three recipient centers.
The donation aims to facilitate the early detection of cervical cancer, a condition with low diagnosis rates in Ghana, thereby improving women’s health and potentially reducing long-term treatment costs.
Ghana Medical Trust Fund(MahamaCares) is established to provide financial assistance to individuals suffering from chronic diseases, particularly focusing on conditions like cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney failure.
The fund also aims to support early detection and prevention efforts for these chronic illnesses, not just complex treatment cases.
Corporate Ghana and individuals are encouraged to contribute to the fund to strengthen its capacity and expand its reach.
