The Government of Ghana has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Ghana, Mr. Thando Dalamba, following recent xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 23, 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, called in the envoy to formally register Ghana’s strong concern over reported acts of intimidation and harassment captured in widely circulated viral videos.
The Minister cited a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province where a Ghanaian national—legally resident in South Africa—was confronted and asked to prove his immigration status before being told to “fix his country” and leave South Africa. He described such conduct as unacceptable and a violation of the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.
Mr. Ablakwa further noted that follow-up reports indicate rising tensions, with some foreign nationals reportedly advised to remain indoors for their safety. Although no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the latest incidents, he warned that similar past occurrences have resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property.
Highlighting the historical ties between the two countries, the Minister referenced Ghana’s support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and the role of Kwame Nkrumah in championing African liberation. He stressed that attacks on fellow Africans undermine the principles of unity and solidarity on the continent.
“The unprovoked harassment of law-abiding individuals is contrary to the ideals of peaceful coexistence among African nations,” the Minister stated.
The Government of Ghana has therefore lodged a formal protest and called on South African authorities to take immediate and effective measures to protect Ghanaian nationals, prevent further escalation, and provide assurances that such incidents will not recur.
In response, Mr. Dalamba acknowledged the concerns and assured that the South African government is addressing the situation. He indicated that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring developments to restore calm and hold perpetrators accountable.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued engagement with South African authorities to ensure their safety.
