The Government of Ghana has announced a shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and surrounding areas following a recent escalation of violence that threatens to derail the ongoing peacebuilding process.
In a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have been deployed to maintain law and order, with curfews intensified to protect lives and property.
“The Ghana Armed Forces have been instructed to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents and protect property,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
“While these measures may cause some inconvenience, they are essential to safeguard the greater good and prevent further violence.”
Government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his ongoing mediation in the conflict and praised the collaborative role of Nayiri and Zugraana in facilitating the peace process.
“The mediation efforts had brought the conflict close to resolution until the very recent killings, which have necessitated decisive action,” the spokesperson added.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to cooperate fully with security forces and refrain from any acts of violence.
“We call on all parties to support the peace process and allow the interventions of Otumfuo and other stakeholders to bring this conflict to an end,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
The government emphasized its commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability in Bawku, assuring residents—including students—that every measure is being taken to ensure their safety.
