Government to spend GH¢88m on STEM education in senior high schools

Government is bidding to spend GH¢88million on the learning of Maths, Science and Engineering at the Senior High School level.

The move is part of two initiatives aimed at boosting the study of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at secondary and basic levels of education.

The  GH¢88million will be spent on the construction, provision of equipment and training of trainers for regional science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics Centre’s for SHS System.

This according to Information minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who says the initiative is aimed at complementing the teaching of science, Mathematics and Technology at the various SHSs in the country.

“The project will improve the pedagogy of teaching of basic maths and science, address the fear of teaching and learning maths and science as well as provide technology kits for maths and science education.”

“It will also provide ICT equipment to improve the competency of both teachers and students,” he stated.

The GH¢88million will be spent on the construction of what the Information minister says are 10 “school based interactive science and technology learning centre which would provide practical approaches towards learning in Senior High Schools”

The government also plans to construct 6 additional centers in the second phase of the initiative.

“Upon receipt of Parliamentary approval and disbursement of funds this phase phase is expected to be completed with 2 years,” he stated.
