President Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans for a new expressway between Accra and Kumasi, aiming to slash travel time between Ghana’s two largest cities to just two and a half hours.
The project forms part of the government’s ambitious $10 billion “Big Push” infrastructure programme, which targets enhanced connectivity, reduced urban congestion, and robust economic growth.
Although full details are yet to be released, the government is already working to improve the existing corridor with the construction of major bypasses at Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo, alongside highway rehabilitation projects.
Despite ongoing efforts, parts of the current route remain in poor condition, posing safety and efficiency challenges.
The government stresses the need for adequate funding and swift execution to make the expressway a reality, with expectations that the new route will significantly boost transportation and economic activity nationwide.
