The Dialysis Service Foundation has revealed that kidney disease will soon be declared as an epidemic by the medical fraternity in the country.
This is the second time the Dialysis Service Foundation is making such a prediction after an earlier issuing the warning when donating some equipment to the Dialysis unit of the Korle-bu Hospital to support patients with kidney related diseases.
Speaking to the media during a kidney walk at Ayi-Mesah over the weekend under the theme: Walking for healthy kidneys,” Chairman of the Dialysis Services Foundation Douglas Prosper Bani noted that there are increasing numbers of Ghanaians battling with kidney disease across the country.
The former Chief of Staff said the aim of the Foundation is to ensure that no life is lost in the country as a result of person’s inability to pay for the treatment of kidney related diseases.
According to him, Dialysis in the country is very expensive therefore there is the need for an initiative to mitigate the cost as well as create awareness for Ghanaians to keep their kidney healthy
He said that patients with acute kidney ailments have to go on dialysis three times a week, with each dialysis section costing GH¢320.
The former Interior Minister cautioned Ghanaians against substance abuse and to pay close attention to what they eat because cases of kidney and kidney related diseases are assuming epidemic proportions in the country.
Board member of the Foundation Mr. Dela Agbo mentioned substance abuse, alcohol and poor eating habits as major contributors to kidney diseases, and called on Ghanaians to exercise and also check their eating habit.
He said the Foundation also intends to support research that will help prevent, and also treat kidney-related diseases.
The walk which started from Ayi-Mensah tollbooth to Peduase brought together members of Foundation, and the general public to help educate the public and raise funds to assist some critically ill patients receiving treatment at various health facilities across the country.
The target of the Foundation is to raise GH¢ 3 million through these initial campaigns.
