Minister for Transport has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated an Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) system at Ghana’s airports to strengthen border security and streamline passenger management.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister explained that the new system is designed to improve the collection, verification, and analysis of passenger data. It will enable airlines to share high-quality information with law enforcement agencies in real time.
According to him, the initiative is a strategic step to enhance national security. It is expected to improve the detection of known or suspected terrorists and criminals, facilitate the timely identification of high-risk travellers, and support crime prevention measures across the aviation sector.
The Minister further noted that the system will also help optimise passenger flow, making travel more efficient for legitimate passengers while enhancing safety standards.
He confirmed that the development of the API/PNR system has been completed successfully, with almost all airlines operating in Ghana now fully integrated into the platform.
The Minister emphasised that this innovation underlines government’s commitment to protecting the country’s borders while modernising airport operations in line with international best practices.
