President John Dramani Mahama has announced his readiness to assent to a proposed bill that will allow Ghanaians in the diaspora to fully participate in the country’s political administration.
According to the President, the government is sponsoring and supporting a bipartisan piece of legislation aimed at removing restrictions that currently limit diaspora involvement in governance.
He emphasized that once the bill is passed by Parliament, Ghanaians living abroad will no longer be required to renounce their foreign citizenship before taking up roles in the political administration of the country.
“We are sponsoring a bipartisan bill that will allow members of the diaspora to fully participate in governance. When it reaches my desk, I will not hesitate to assent to it,” he stated.
President Mahama highlighted the significant economic contributions of Ghanaians abroad, noting that remittances remain a critical pillar of the economy.
“Remittances were the second highest contributor to Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings after gold in 2025, bringing in about 7.8 billion dollars,” he said.
The President made these remarks during a diaspora dialogue with Ghanaians in Philadelphia on Thursday night, where he also encouraged continued investment in key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
He urged members of the diaspora to channel resources into strategic areas that will drive growth and development, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties between Ghana and its global community.
