President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has been honoured with the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, marking a historic milestone as the first African leader to receive the Council’s highest distinction since its inception in 1973.
The award, regarded as the pinnacle of recognition by the Council, celebrates global leaders whose contributions have significantly advanced peace, freedom, and international cooperation.
Presenting the award at a ceremony held on Friday, March 27, 2026, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, praised President Mahama’s enduring commitment to democratic governance and global engagement.
“Throughout his distinguished career, President John Mahama has exemplified the qualities this award seeks to honour steadfast democratic leadership, strengthening international partnerships, championing peaceful political transitions, fostering economic and regional prosperity, and serving as a global advocate for Africa,” she stated.
The International Statesperson Award has been conferred periodically over the past five decades on influential global figures whose leadership has left a lasting imprint on world affairs.
In his acceptance speech, President Mahama attributed his dedication to peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s founding leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.
“My motivation has always been inspired by the vision and sacrifices of Africa’s forebears, who laid the foundation for unity, justice, and dignity for our people,” he noted.
The World Affairs Council described its platform as a space “where continents, cultures, and ideas connect,” reinforcing its mission to promote global dialogue and understanding.
President Mahama’s recognition is seen as a significant moment for Ghana and the African continent, underscoring the growing influence of African leadership on the global stage.
