A professor in Economics at the University of Cape Coast and a member of the NDC’s manifesto team on infrastructure, Professor Ferdinand Ahiakpor says the Financial Management Act is a key tool that can be used to combat corruption.
Speaking to Radio Gold on the sideline of the NDC manifesto launch in Winneba, Professor Ahiagbe says the party having realized the importance of the Financial Management Act would fully implement the policy as one of the cornerstone strategy to tackle waste and deal with corruption.
He noted that financial irregularities have and continue to undermine Ghana’s economic growth.
“To remove corruption, we will ensure that we implement the Financial Management Act fully. We need to reduce corruption because it hurts the economy,” he stated.
He stated that the NDC plans to spend in key sectors that have a direct impact on the jobs and the living standards of Ghanaians.
“Our expenditures will be anchored on a 24-hour economy and the Women’s Development Bank, ensuring that we create jobs, improve living standards, and restore public confidence in our economy,” Professor Ahiagbe explained.
The economist who previously served on the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa further indicated that the NDC’s plans are strategically aimed at spurring economic growth that benefits all citizens.
“This is about reducing corruption and growing the economy for the betterment of everybody,” he noted, positioning the party’s policies as inclusive and forward-thinking.
Professor Ahiagbe further confirmed NDC’s commitment to tax reforms, by reaffirming the promise made by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama to eliminate the betting tax, cancel the controversial e-levy, and remove the COVID-19 tax imposed by the government of President Akufo-Addo.
“These measures will alleviate the financial burden on citizens and encourage economic activity,” he said.
Professor Ahiagbe called on voters to consider the potential benefits of implementing the NDC’s proposed framework to vote massively for John Mahama.
He said the NDC is aiming to win the trust and confidence of Ghanaians looking for change by positioning itself as a viable alternative focused on transparency, economic revitalization, and infrastructure improvement.
