The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration says no Ghanaian in China has currently contracted the novel coronavirus.
Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province in China where the virus first occurred has seen more than a thousand confirmed cases including cases outside Wuhan city.
In a statement the Ministry assured all parents, relatives and friends of Ghanaians in China that “the Embassy of Ghana in Beijing and the Consulate-General in Guangzhou are in contact with leadership of the Ghanaian community and the National Union of Ghana Students – China and receive frequent briefing from them on the welfare of all Ghanaian nationals.”
The statement also indicated that the Ministry has advised all Ghanaians to stay indoors and adhere to preventive precautions outlined by Chinese authorities adding that it is also in contact with Ghanaian students and is liaising with their leadership, the Wuhan Foreign Office and Universities “to ensure the continued safety of our students and the provision of basic necessities.”
The Ministry has also outlined “some measures to be observed by all Ghanaians that intend to travel to China during this period: Buy medical insurance, acquaint themselves with the nearest medical; facility where they treat high fevers and also speak English or have a translator who can help in case of emergency and anyone visiting Wuhan would be subjected to a mandatory 14 day quarantine before leaving the province.”
Meanwhile, no specific treatment is currently available, so treatment is focused on alleviation of symptoms, which include fever, fatigue, dry cough, and shortness of breath, or pneumonia and kidney failure in severe cases.
