The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly condemned recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign residents across South Africa, describing the incidents as unlawful and contrary to the country’s constitutional values.
In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Police, authorities denounced acts of violence, intimidation, and looting directed at foreign nationals, emphasizing that such behavior undermines the principles of dignity, equality, and human rights upon which the nation is founded.
The Ministry stressed that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of grievances. It reaffirmed that South Africa remains a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law, warning that criminal acts will be met with firm legal consequences.
SAPS has been directed to respond decisively to the situation, with assurances that anyone found participating in, inciting, or supporting the attacks will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
Authorities are also appealing to the public to remain calm and reject attempts to fuel division and hatred within communities. Community leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders have been urged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to prevent further violence and promote peaceful coexistence.
The statement comes amid growing concern over the safety of foreign nationals, particularly Ghanaians, following reports of targeted attacks in parts of the country.
