The Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Lawyer Edmund Kombat joined John Dramani Mahama, senior government officials, and downstream energy sector CEOs on Thursday, March 12, 2026, to officially launch the Sahara LPG vessel, MT Asharami Ghana, in Ulsan – South Korea.
The commissioning of the vessel marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s energy sector, aimed at strengthening liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply chains and enhancing energy security both domestically and across West Africa.
The MT Asharami Ghana, operated by the Sahara Group, is expected to boost regional LPG transport capacity, ensuring safer and more reliable delivery of clean energy to households and businesses.
The development aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to promote cleaner energy alternatives and reduce dependence on traditional fuels.
President Mahama, in his remarks, underscored the importance of the initiative in advancing Ghana’s energy transition agenda. He noted that the country currently produces about 50 percent of its LPG requirements locally, with the remainder sourced through imports.
“This achievement strengthens Ghana’s energy infrastructure and supports our transition to cleaner energy sources,” he stated.
The President also commended Sahara Group for its continued investment in Ghana’s energy sector, expressing confidence that the new vessel will significantly improve LPG supply chains and help meet growing regional energy demand.
The addition of the MT Asharami Ghana is expected to enhance operational efficiency within the downstream petroleum sector, support energy sovereignty, and contribute to economic growth and sustainable development in Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.
