First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama joined her counterparts from across Africa at a high-level side event during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80).
The gathering, convened by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), focused on the theme “Building Resilience for Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change and Conflict.”
The event highlighted the disproportionate toll of climate change and armed conflicts on women and girls, who are often the most affected by displacement, resource scarcity, and heightened risks of violence.
In a major outcome, the First Ladies launched a unified campaign pledge to advocate for responsive policies, mobilise resources, and implement tailored programmes aimed at strengthening the resilience of women and girls in crisis-prone regions.
Mrs. Mahama, speaking on the theme of “Strength,” reaffirmed her dedication to the initiative:
“I pledged to support this campaign that centres on African solutions and strength, which is rooted in its women and girls. In the face of climate and conflict challenges, their courage sustains families and communities. By investing in their strength, we build resilience for generations to come.”
The OAFLAD campaign underscores the determination of African First Ladies to amplify women’s voices and drive concrete interventions that ensure inclusivity and resilience in the face of global challenges.
